What makes a move long distance?

There’s no official definition of what qualifies as a “long distance” move, but it’s generally moving outside of your city to another.

Long Distance vs Interstate vs Intrastate

Interstate

If you’re moving across state lines (interstate), you likely need to hire a moving company with a valid USDOT license. This licensing information comes from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and applies to a moving company's ability to perform a long distance Interstate Move (for example: from California to Texas).

If your move crosses state lines within the same commercial zone, or metropolitan area (for example: DC to Alexandria, VA), it is generally not considered an interstate move and a moving company may not need an "Active" license from FMCSA to perform this type of move.

Long Distance

There is no official designation regarding what constitutes a "long distance" move. But, one thing is clear. A "long-distance" move that does NOT cross state lines is not considered an interstate move and would not require a valid USDOT license (unless the state regulations additionally require it). For example, the 800 mile move from El Paso, TX to Texarkana, TX may be "long distance", but it is still an intrastate move and only regulated by local statewide authority (in this case, the TXDMV).

Intrastate

Intrastate moves (within the same state) are regulated by state and local jurisdictions and licensing requirements vary according to locale.
