The Unofficial Guide to The Move.Mil Website

A Little Background On How It Got Started

The Official DPS Portal Move.Mil was created to make the moving process easier and less stressful. It took the coordination of a number of different organizations to compile and organize the facts, figures, information, and resources to streamline the military moving process. The three organizations that came together to form DPS are the Military Surface Deployment and Distribution Command (SDDC), the US Department of Defense (DoD), and United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM). Collectively, these organizations formed the Defense Personal Property Program (DP3). One of the facets of the DP3 mission was to create an internet platform to help manage the entire DoD household goods move.  This is referred to as the Defense Personal Property System (DPS).

The Difference Between My Move.mil & DPS

For starters, move.mil and DPS are not the same thing.  The Move.Mil website is the portal for requesting a password via the Electronic Transportation Acquisition (ETA) so that you can then log into the DPS section (from the top of the Move.mil website). Additionally, the move.mil website is built to contain additional resources to assist you throughout the move.

Reasons To Use Move.Mil

  • Self counseling & easy online reporting
  • Easy ability to file the claim online to recoup the costs of hiring your own movers (Transportation Service Provider – TSP)
  • Get the Full Replacement Value of items that were lost or damaged, instead of the previously offered “depreciated value”
  • Give back to the community with a satisfaction survey to make certain that only the best moving companies are part of the network
